Wuppertal, Solingen and Remscheid form the Bergisches Städtedreieck (city triangle). It lies in central NRW between the Rhine and the Ruhr and describes itself as a "rural workshop region". More than 620,000 people live here on an area of 332.5 square kilometers with an average population density of 1,875 inhabitants/square kilometer. Around 194.000 employees work at over 36,500 companies in the region.
Today the Bergisches Städtedreieck economic region concentrates on its special areas of expertise, namely automotive, event & communications, health & personal care, metal-working, and product design/development. However, traditional sectors such as the textile industry, tool-making, the cutting implement and cutlery industry, surface technology, and galvanization now also form focal points of the regional economy. Erfurt Rauhfasertapete, Solinger Klingen, Vorwerk, and Zwilling are just some of the well-known names from the region.
Besides the Bergische Universität Wuppertal with its more than 14,000 students, education and research are concentrated at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, and the Technical Academy Wuppertal. The focal areas of product design, metal-working, and tool-making reflect the core competences of the region here.
The Bergisches Städtedreieck has an excellent traffic infrastructure. The A1, A3, and A46 freeways, nationwide ICE direct rail links, and the international major airports in Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn ensure first-rate transport connections.
