Duesseldorf Region

The City of Düsseldorf and the Rhine River

The Duesseldorf region embraces the state capital and the district of Mettmann. With an average population density of 1,736 inhabitants/square kilometer, about 1.1 million people live here on an area of 624 square kilometers.

As a result of economic and structural changes the region has developed into an attractive location in Germany for investors. Today, approximately 81,000 companies provide work for around 534,000 people in the different economic sectors. Internationally renowned companies such as E.ON, Henkel, McKinsey, Metro,Qiagen, and Vodafone reflect the economic potential of the region. The service industry and the research and development sector in particular, which are very strong in the region, provide important economic stimuli.

The city of Duesseldorf is one of Germany's leading communication and media centers. This is evidenced by the transformation of the former shipping harbor into a modern business quarter – the Duesseldorf MediaHarbor. The district of Mettmann is distinguished in particular by the companies which have settled there from the field of biotechnology and genetic engineering such as Artes Biotechnology and Bayer CropScience.

The region is characterized by a dense university landscape. Together with the numerous research institutes such as the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research, the Heinrich Heine University and Duesseldorf University of Applied Science form the academic hub of the region.

Duesseldorf is one of Germany's top three trade fair venues in terms of sales, hosting leading international events such as drupa, the K plastics trade or MEDICA.

The favorable location on the Rhine is key to the economic success of the region. The well-developed infrastructure surrounding the federal waterway with links to the international major airports 'Duesseldorf International' and 'Cologne Bonn Airport' and the A3, A46 and A57 freeways is a positive location factor. Important european economic metropolis can be reached by air within one hour from Düsseldorf: Amsterdam, Brusseld, London, Luxembourg, Paris and Zurich.

The region in and around the state capital Duesseldorf also has a lot to offer in terms of culture. It is well known for its distinctive art and culture scene and presents major modern German art collections in museums such as the Kunstsammlung NRW or the Museum Kunstpalast. In addition, one of Germany's most famous places is to be found in the region: Neanderthal. The Neanderthal Museum in Mettmann traces the history of human evolution.
