The Lower Rhine region lies in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia between the River Rhine and the Netherlands. A total of more than 4.5 million inhabitants live in the cities of Krefeld, and Mönchengladbach, as well as the districts Kleve, Viersen and Rhein-Kreis Neuss. With a total area of 2,680 square kilometers the average population density is 577 inhabitants/square kilometer.
Nearly 93,000 companies are based in the region, providing work for over 445,000 employees. Chemicals, energy production, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, logistics, tourism, the food industry/agrobusiness, and the modern textile industry form the focal points of the economy in the Lower Rhine region. Approx. 70 percent of the gross value added is generated in services, while the manufacturing industry arrives at an export quota of approx. 50 percent. ALTANA, 3M, Fressnapf, and Mars are just some of the most well-known firms in the region. In addition, the Lower Rhine is an important center for Japanese companies in Germany, with Canon, Daihatsu, Hitachi High Technologies, Hitachi Power Tool, Toshiba Europe, and Toyo Reifen among the firms operating their headquarters here.
The Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach, the technology centers and scientific institutes such as the Fraunhofer Institute of Microelectronic Circuits and Systems provide companies with good points of contact in research and development.
With a dense road and rail network, Düsseldorf International Airport, and an additional airport with European connections in Weeze, trade and commerce are ensured an efficient infrastructure.
