The total trading volume of North Rhine-Westphalia from imports and exports amounts to more than EUR 340 billion (2010). NRW's most important trading partner is the EU (27) with a trading volume of EUR 212 billion (2010).

16.9 percent of all goods exported from Germany are "Made in NRW". Compared to 2009 exports increased by 17 percent to 162.1 billion euros.

With an import volume of almost EUR 178.2 billion, North Rhine-Westphalia is Germany's strongest import state. 22 percent of all German imports are delivered to NRW. Compared to 2009, imports rose by 20.6 percent.
