The total trading volume of North Rhine-Westphalia from imports and exports amounts to EUR 286.4 billion (2009). NRW's most important trading partner is the EU (27) with a trading volume of EUR 187.5 billion (2009).

17.1 percent of all goods exported from Germany are "Made in NRW". With an export volume of EUR 138.6 billion, North Rhine-Westphalia is 18th in the world, comparable to Spain and Taiwan.

With an import volume of almost EUR 147.8 billion, North Rhine-Westphalia is Germany's strongest import state. 21.9 percent of all German imports are delivered to NRW. The import volume of NRW is comparable to that of Mexico, India and Singapore and larger than that of Russia, Taiwan and Australia.
