The number of students in North Rhine-Westphalia has risen to 595,000 (+11.2% compared to the previous winter semester). This means that 25% of all German students have chosen North Rhine-Westphalia as their place of study.
In the entire study year 2011 (summer semester 2011 and winter semester 2011/2012) 515,800 students commenced their studies at universities in Germany. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) the number of first-year students rose by 16% compared to 2010.
There was a significant increase in the number of students beginning their studies in North Rhine-Westphalia (+119,486 / +22 %), as well as in Bavaria (+85,758 / +32 %) and Baden-Württemberg (+77,612 / +19 %).
The entrance rate (new students as a proportion of the population of the same age) in the 2011 study year was 55%. Compared to the prior year, this was an increase of 10 percentage points. Both the increase in the number of new students and the higher entrance rate are largely attributable to the doubling of secondary school leaver numbers in Bavaria and Lower Saxony and the abolishment of military service.
Information is available on the students who began to study in four selected technically oriented areas of study in 2011.
